Captured in South Africa in 2016 during a Rolling Stone feature, this portrait of Sinder Alice unfolded in an entirely unplanned moment. She was in the country opening the final world tour of Rodriguez, known as Sugarman, when this encounter happened.

There was no staging, no direction. Just a meeting between human and animal, held in stillness.

Beside her stands Ashanti, an elephant whose presence carries a depth that is difficult to articulate. Elephants have always held a special place for me. Intelligent, sentient, matriarchal, and deeply emotional, they move through the world with a quiet awareness that feels almost human.

This image holds that feeling. A moment of recognition. Of softness and strength existing side by side.
